The Boxer Uprising (Rebellion) |
The Boxer Uprising was an uprising against foreigners that began in China in 1900 and was eventually supported by the government. The Chinese secret society known as the Boxer began a violent campaign to expel foreigners from China. In 1901, 239 missionaries were martyred in the Boxer Revolt, the first to be suppressed by the Qing Dynasty. Later, the empress tried to drive Western influence out of China by aggression against foreign missionaries. Officially, it supported the peasant uprisings of 1900, which wanted to drive foreigners out of China. The rebellion was finally quelled by a joint military expedition of eight foreign powers, with the help of the United States, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Russia, the Netherlands, and France. |
