A Historic Urban Park Along the Brandywine River
Brandywine Park is the historic green heart of Wilmington, Delaware, stretching along both banks of the scenic Brandywine River. Established in 1886 as Wilmington’s first public park, it remains one of the city’s most beloved outdoor spaces and an important part of the Wilmington State Parks system.
The park spans nearly 178 acres of woodland, open lawns, and riverfront landscapes, offering visitors a peaceful escape within the city. Walking paths wind through wooded hillsides and along the creek, providing scenic views of the water, historic monuments, and beautifully maintained gardens.
Designed by parks commissioner Samuel Canby in consultation with renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the park follows a naturalistic layout that blends winding trails, sweeping lawns, and wooded riverbanks into the surrounding landscape.
Gardens, Wildlife, and Historic Landmarks
One of Brandywine Park’s most recognizable attractions is the Jasper Crane Rose Garden, a historic garden filled with hundreds of rose varieties that bloom throughout the growing season. Maintained with support from Friends of Wilmington Parks, the garden remains one of the park’s most photographed locations.
In spring, the park’s cherry blossom trees create a colorful canopy along walking paths and open lawns, drawing visitors each year for seasonal photographs and outdoor events.
Another popular feature is the Sugar Bowl, an open-air oratory stage built in the 19th century that historically hosted speeches by prominent figures and today serves as a venue for community events and summer concerts.
Home of the Brandywine Zoo
Located within the park is the Brandywine Zoo, Delaware’s only zoo. Founded in 1905, the zoo occupies several acres along the Brandywine River and features animals from around the world in a compact, family-friendly setting.
The zoo remains a major attraction in the park, offering wildlife exhibits, educational programs, and conservation initiatives that connect visitors with nature and global ecosystems.
Trails and Recreation
Brandywine Park offers numerous recreational opportunities for visitors exploring the riverfront landscape.
Popular activities include:
- Walking and jogging along scenic riverside paths
- Cycling along paved park trails
- Fishing along the Brandywine River

A fitness circuit loop provides outdoor exercise stations for visitors who want to combine a park walk with a workout.
The park also includes playgrounds, athletic fields, and nearby sports facilities such as Abessinio Stadium, a historic athletic venue located along the park’s western edge.
A Key Part of Wilmington State Parks
Brandywine Park forms the centerpiece of the Wilmington State Parks, a group of urban parks connected along the Brandywine River corridor. These parks include:
- Rockford Park
- Alapocas Run State Park
- H. Fletcher Brown Park
- Kentmere Parkway
Together, they create a network of green spaces that link Wilmington’s neighborhoods to nature and recreation along the river.
