The Grand Canyon is a massive, steep-sided canyon carved over millions of years by the Colorado River. It is over 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide, and more than a mile (6,093 feet or 1,857 meters) deep. The Grand Canyon National Monument was established in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt to protect the area and its unique geological and ecological features. It was later designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The Grand Canyon is home to various plant and animal life and is a popular destination for hikers, backpackers, and sightseers.
