Nostradamus was a man whose life is shrouded in misinterpretation and mysticism, it is said that he predicted the rise of Adolf Hitler and the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and whether he was a true born seer or a fraud many people still today look to his writings for information about their future.
Michel de Nostradame (1503-1566) was born in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Provence, France. The residence where he is claimed to have been born exists to this day, but has since undergone renovation. Little is known about Nostradamus’ childhood, only that he might have been educated by his great-grandfather, Jean de St. Remy.
Though Nostradamus is most well known for his predictions of the future he was professionally a healer and apothecary. It is possible that he was driven with special passion for healing after his wife and children perished from plague in 1534.
In 1550 Nostradamus began to make a shift from the medical field to the metaphysical as he published his first almanac; however his most famous work was his book, “Les Propheties” which was first published in 1955. Nostradamus wrote his prophecies in unorganized quatrains which he claimed were to avoid persecution from the Inquisition, though this is not logically backed as works of astrology were not matters of interest for the Catholic Church.
Skeptics of Nostradamus’ accuracy claim that most of the “correct” predictions from Les Propheties are misinterpretations at best and at worst complete falsehoods invented by the paranoid. Regardless millions of people still firmly believe that Nostradamus had divine sight and shared it with us within his writings.
Nostradamus died in 1566 at 62 and has left the world debating and guessing over his predictions ever since.
