Summer Songs

The Most Requested Summer Music

Summer Songs come in two different varieties:

1. The the classic songs that describe summertime, vacations, beaches and the boardwalk.

2. The songs that were payed in constant rotation on the radio and dance clubs

Included are timeless, obvious songs like Summertime by LFO and Summer in The City by The Lovin' Spoonful and there were songs that were played non-stop on the radio over the summer like Step By Step by New Kids On The Block, Respect by Aretha Franklin and (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones.

The eighties brought Summer Songs to us via movies (Kokomo, Axel F, Flashdance and Eye of The Tiger), Micheal Jackson's songs and more 'sunshine', 'hot' and summer-ready songs.

Don't Speak by No Doubt was released in late 1996, but stayed on the Billboard Charts for over a year, and dominated during the summer of 1997.

We also noted that some of the best-known summer songs did not come out over the summer at all. Miserlou, the song that defines Surf Music, was released in January, 1963. Dancing In The Street by Martha and the Vandellas is widely considered one of the greatest Summer Songs of all time, but it peaked on the Billboard Charts in October of that year.

If a song's title or primary lyrics are about Summer, that usually bumps it in nostalgia value on our lists. Some songs like Hollaback Girl and Poker Face get a bigger nostalgic/retro vote too.

We included both the classic summer songs and songs in different genres that dominated the airwaves during the summer, with our own Pop Culture Madness look at the songs that outlasted other songs from their era.

1900-1959 Songs of the Summer listed are from the 'Great American Songbook' and the most popular songs of the first pop music era. While a modern song can streak to the top ten on the charts and disappear a few weeks later, songs from this era were often sung (and charted) by several artists, often within different genres and styles. Prior to the Pop/Rock era, where many artists wrote the songs they performed, music was very much controlled by the songwriters and/or copyright holders.
